Olympic education.

The Olympic Games are proving to be a fabulous educational tool.

Yesterday, whilst Violet and I watched the diving competition, Violet kept asking me where all the competitors came from.  So I scrambled about in some dusty old boxes, in the back of a cupboad until I'd dug out my (very) old World Atlas, which I'd used for GCSE Geography.

The World map inside isn't the biggest, and wasn't entirely accurate.  However, I was able to show her where the countries were; China, Russia, Cuba, Mexico, USA  (which she calls Americanland), Great Britain, Germany, & Ukraine.

She even asked me to show her where South Africa and Egypt were.

When her dad came home from work hours later, off she trotted to get the Atlas out again.  I stood there open mouthed whilst she acurately pointed to, and named, China, Russia, Cuba, Mexico, Americanland, and 'us' (meaning Great Britain).

Four year olds seem to have brains like little sponges don't they?

Think it's time to pick up one of those Giant World maps and have it mounted on a wall.

How are you all enjoying The Games so far?

It was sad that Daley & Waterfield didn't get a medal, but they gave it their best shot.  I thought the Mexican team were amazing.  As was Kristian Thomas in the team gymnastics.  I was utterly gripped by all the excitement.   I cannot begin to imagine how much training both the divers and gymnasts have to do.  It makes me feel like such a couch potato.

  1. I remember doing the map thing with the boys for the 2000 & 2004 events.

The divers are amazing - just the thought of diving off a 10metre board makes me feel faint!

    1. Just thinking about them perched on the edge just by their toes makes me feel ill.
      They were utterly brilliant.

I was sorry for the divers as well, I couldn't even climb up to that height, let alone jump off!!

    1. Thanks Vivienne - we had fun with paint this morning. Though we didn't seem to have black, so ended up with a purple ring instead.
I read today that some teenager had been arrested for sending Tom Daley some threatening tweets for losing - how disgusting is that?
