Violet and I spent a lovely morning at the local library making some creepy houses, which is the theme of this Summer's reading challenge for children. We had great fun, got covered in a lot of glittery glue, and met some really nice families.
When we arrived back home I was still in the crafting mood.
As you know, sewing seems to be my 'go to' craft at the moment. I just can't get enough of my trusty sewing machine can I?
We're off on our holidays in a weeks time and we desperately need a large beach bag. Big enough for a few towels, blanket, sun cream, etc.
I bought both the outer fabric and the lining from John Lewis earlier in the week, in the hope that I'd get chance to whip one up before we actually left for our holiday.
The outer fabric was from upholstery department. It's called World Map.
For the lining I used an aqua coloured Lawn.
Like I mentioned earlier, I wanted the bag to be on the large side in order to fit everything in. I cut two squares of both (measuring 61cm wide, by 57cm depth).
The handles look rather short, but they are long enough for the bag to be carried easily on your shoulder.
I'm extremely happy with how this turned out. The fabric is really lovely, and because it's curtain fabric, it feels very robust.
I made it extra sturdy by using a thick, iron-on interfacing, and by sewing a wide gusset into the bottom of the bag.
I'm also over the moon by how much it actually cost me to make. The World Map fabric cost me £10.80, the Lawn cost £1.95, and the thread was £1.60. Total cost £14.35 - Bargain!
I can't wait to start using it.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

We had such fun making those creepy houses. Can't wait to start using my new beach bag - I've had a commission to make another one. xx
DeleteWhat a fab day. That bag is so perfect and so pretty!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sarah. Violet and I really enjoyed ourselves, sticking and painting, and basically getting messy. x
DeleteThat's totally fabulous, the perfect fabric for a beach bag, and you've made it big enough to carry everything in without being cumbersome. I really love it. The creepy houses are fab too, and I can't end my comment without mentioning that cutesy dinosaur in your last post, she really should be a model.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jo, the map fabric is lovely, isn't it? I wonder how much longer Violet will be a willing model. Hopefully, she's got a few years in her yet before she starts to complain :0) xx
DeleteGorgeous!!!
ReplyDeletethe fabric is perfect for that bag!!
Thank for visiting, and for your lovely comments. x
DeleteHi Jill! I love the map bag. I really like old maps, the more colorful the better. I came here from Jo's blog, where I saw the bag she won in your giveaway. It's really gorgeous. I'm a new follower and looking forward to reading more. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer. So pleased you decided to pop on over from Jo's blog, it's always nice to (virtually) meet new folks. I'm off on my jollies imminently, so it'll be quiet on my blog for a little while, though I hope you'll be popping back. I'm planning another giveaway for September.

Love the bag, and the fabric is just perfect for the job. I hope you are having a wonderful time! Bethx
ReplyDeleteThanks Beth. I originally wanted some fabric with Seagulls on, but couldn't find what I wanted anywhere. I'm so glad this jumped out at Violet and I whilst we were browsing the fabrics in JL. I should take Violet with me to choose fabrics more often, she's really got a good eye.

Hi Jill, I have just found your blog via Jo's what a lovely bag you made for her! I like your creepy houses will have to have a go at those with mine, your map bag is great! I did look through previous posts of yours like the jammies and the quilt post was nice to look through. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting, Gail. Glad you liked Jo's bag, and my new map beach bag - it proved very useful on our recent holidays to Dorset.
