What a wet, windy weekend that one was.
We took a trip over to Coventry and the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum on Saturday afternoon. Apparently it's this year's winner of the The Guardian Family-Friendly Museum Award.
There were some great hands on activities for children (and big children). I was particularly impressed with the Element exhibition, where there were plenty of multi-media, multi-sensory activities all relating to the 4 elements (Fire, Air, Water and Earth).
Have you seen this painting before?

Isn't it beautiful?
You'll find the original in the Herbert.
The cafe was also a great place to sit and relax - very light, spacious and above all, clean. I was served a very decent cup of coffee and all three of us fought over a slice of their tasty Victoria Sandwich.
The art gallery is free and right opposite Coventry Cathedral.
We didn't visit the Cathedral on this visit as I believe that it's quite expensive to go in.
Here's what that window is supposed to look like from the inside :

Looks lovely, doesn't it?

I've been given the name of my Fairtale Swap person - apparently she'd like to receive items relating to the Brother's Grimm story of Rumpelstiltskin.
All I could remember about Rumplestiltskin was that it had something to do with spinning straw into gold. So I thought I'd check it out on the internet. I'd forgotten just how dark this story is.
I do remember having this ladybird book as a child, does it bring back any memories for you?

I'm going to have to really put my thinking cap on for this one. If you have any brainwaves you will let me know won't you?

Sounds like you had a lovely weekend, despite the miserable weather. I LOVE the Godiva painting, it's so beautiful!

Send her a spinning wheel! Or GOLD!
ReplyDeleteSorry. Did you want sensible suggestions. So sorry I can't help you out there. I will try and put my normal head on and see what I can come up with. I expect the answer will be zilch.
Oh my god send her a garden gnome and say it's Rumpelstiltksin! No?! That was my best answer.
What a fun outing you had, I so love museums. That Godiva painting is gorgeous. We went to two museums here in Tucson yesterday (Mother's Day). One was exhibiting Ansel Adams' photography and the other was paintings. I loved it.
ReplyDeleteI like the one suggestion left in your comments for a spinning wheel. Maybe you could find a gold spinning wheel charm for your recipient to add to a bracelet or string on a necklace. If you're into clay crafts, you could make a fairy door and paint it gold.
Sounds like your trip out was lots of fun despite the weather.
ReplyDeletePerhaps you could send some lovely gold coloured fabric and/or yarn to represent the gold that was spun in the tale??
I used to have so many of those Ladybird books when I was a child, I'd very much like to collect them all again now.
